The vision of the Guemes History Project is to pick up where the former Historical Society left off and renew their dream It's an historic endeavor! We have a collection to inventory and conserve, assets to manage and a physical site to create. We began our efforts after the Historical Society was dissolved with the passing of its founding leaders, and we thank the Guemes Island Library for their vision and efforts of taking on the 501(c)3 fiduciary role in the interim.
The Project is nearly complete! As of August, 2024, the Project has re-established the Guemes Island Historical Society (GIHS 2.0!) as a Washinton State non-profit corporation and will soon be registered as a federal 501(c)3 corporation. Until them, donations can be made on GIHS's behalf through the Guemes Island Library.
The nature of historical, archival, and manuscript collections often make it difficult to determine the exact copyright status of an item. Whenever possible, we attempt to determine the copyright status of an item. In some instances, we have incomplete information about creators, publishers, or other persons associated with the materials. We welcome comments from anyone who may have additional information or corrections, especially copyright owners who are not correctly identified, so that accurate information may be provided to researchers and teachers in the future.
Recognized as a nonprofit corporation by Washington State effective 1 Sept 2024, the Guemes Island Historical Society operates under the tax deductible 501c3 fiduciary umbrella of the Guemes Island Library as we transition to full autonomy.
Send a check to the Guemes Island Library with memo "for GIHS" at 7549 Guemes Island Rd, Anacortes, WA 98221. Online donations can be made through our Square account.
