WELCOME!
The mission of the Guemes Island Historical Society is to lead an inclusive, multi-generational community to discover, preserve and promote Guemes Island history through an array of fun, volunteer-led activities. To fulfill our mission, the Society currently:
• Meets regularly to review and catalog our collection.
• Archives artifacts, documents, photos, along with audio and video recordings.
• Studies the Coast Salish indigenous history of Guemes.
• Documents the post-contact agriculture, boat builders and homesteaders.
• Hosts public events we call Memories Nights to feature elements of Guemes Island history.
• Creates video recordings that include Oral Histories and past Memories Night Presentations at https://www.youtube.com/@guemeshistoryproject/videos.
• Maintains a Facebook Page http://www.facebook.com/guemeshistoryproject/
• Raises funds to support our Mission, including our goal to create a museum.
• Offers our new cookbook: "Guemes Island Recipes Through the Years" which is available to purchase at all GIHS events, the Guemes Island Summer Music Series, and other selected island events (see website or FB page for announcements)
• Collaborates with the Library to produce the "Mini-Shipwreck Days" event.
We invite you to become a Friend of GIHS. Please send your name and contact information, including email and address to info@guemeshistoryproject.org to receive news, and information about upcoming events.
